Affecting Humans and Animals
Fresh water is actually very rare only 3 % of the world is made up of it. No human, plant or animal can live without water.
Most of our water is used for farming, 70% is used for agriculture while we only use 10% for domestic uses. If our water supply continues to decrease it means that crops and farming that need large amounts of water will have lower yield. Farm animals will begin to die and the ones that survive will be unhealthy and unable to be eaten or used in any other way. Not only does water scarcity affect out animals enormously it also affects our everyday lives. Places that most people take for granted such as restaurants and other public facilities will be forced to use less water for activities such as cleaning. This could affect the health of staff and the public and cause huge sanitation issues. Another way water scarcity can affect humans is through our education. In many third world countries young children, usually girls, have to get up at the crack of dawn to go on long journeys to collect fresh water for their families, this often results in the children becoming exhausted and unable to attend school. They are so focused on getting their water that they don't have time for school and over the years they miss more and more. Some places even don't allow the girls to be educated as they are needed for fetching water and taking care of their families needs. |
